Life is better than death. Love; greater than either…

3 Movies in 3 Days.

Let’s start with some ‘memorable’ quotes…

The Prestige…
[after showing a little boy how to do a coin trick]
“Never show anyone. They’ll beg you and they’ll flatter you for the secret, but as soon as you give it up… you’ll be nothing to them… The secret impresses no one. The trick you use it for is everything.”

Casino Royale…
[after Bond has just lost his 10 million in the game, to the bartender]
“Vodka-martini.”
“Shaken or stirred?”
“Do I look like I give a damn?”

Sideways…
Jack: Just don’t give up, alright? You’re gonna make it.
Miles: Half my life is over and I have nothing to show for it. Nothing. I’am thumbprint on the window of a skyscraper. I’m a smudge of excrement on a tissue surging out to sea with a million tons of raw sewage.

Jack: See? Right there. Just what you just said. That is beautiful. ‘A smudge of excrement… surging out to sea.’
Miles: Yeah.
Jack: I could never write that.
Miles: Neither could I, actually. I think it’s Bukowsky.

It was DVD Days these past few days. Got the first two movies (overnight rentals) from VideoEzy and they decided to give me one weekly for free. Wanted something not as ‘serious’ as the first two so I picked up a movie on my ‘mentally must-watch-list’, “Sideways”. It was in the comedy section but it was far from laugh out funny though but it was a good movie I should say. I thought I would lose my train of thought and drift off during the movie but it kept me on track and the speed of the movie was fantastic. Nothing rushed, just cruisy. A jazzy soundtrack helped too.

The Prestige was quite good too. Didn’t expect the ending to be like that but ah well… Scarlett Johansson was more of a prop than anything else and frankly speaking, I would like to see her more of her. hehe 😛 But anyway, good movie for a cold rainy day stay-in session. Oh did I mention Jim Carrey’s movie, “The Number 23” here before? IT. IS. AWESOME. I love it! Maybe cause I can associate so much with Jim Carrey’s character… muahaha maybe not. If you liked “Secret Window” and twisty movies, “The Number 23” will not disappoint.

(A little side note. Joel Schumacher directed The Number 23… in addition to the Batman films and Phone Booth. But as I was browsing IMDB, just found out that Secret Window’s director, David Koepp directed the Jurassic Park movies, the Spiderman (1) movie and is going to direct the 4th Spidey movie… Amazing huh? I find it intriguing… hmmm…)

Anyway… but among the three movies, I liked “Casino Royale” the most. Judging it as a stand-alone movie, I would say it clearly wants to setup Daniel Craig as a younger Bond, freshly promoted, brash, insecure and arrogant, all in one. Again, I don’t know which book is Casino Royale in the Ian Fleming’s series (aiya, I should know, I did a feature story on “Die Another Day” once :P) but it seems very much it was a young Bond. (Hmmm… apparently it’s Bond’s first mission…)

Ah well, it was different from recent memory Bond movies and it proved refreshing to see Bond from this perspective. More of a love story than anything else I would say. Bordering on the demanding, I would invite you to watch this movie. hehe I wouldn’t even take sides on Brosnan or Craig (or god-forbid that you want to include Sean Connery and gang) at this point of time. Like I said, it was a different Bond movie, worth the time to watch seriously.

The script was quite funny too I think! Pokes fun at spy-genre stereotypes…

Other thoughts?

God bless!
