Spore: A Review

Spore was one of the few games I really really wanted to try out. There was Crysis which I tried and because it had the NanoSuit thing, I thought it would be special. Well, it was and not to mention hardware consuming but it was still basically, an FPS (first person shooter). Spore on the other hand, brought to you by the creators of The Sims; had literally no solid detailed description of its gameplay, anywhere. So that left me seriously curious.

Before I played the game, it only told you about the Cell stage, the Creature stage, the Civilization stage and the Space stage. And I knew you started from a cell evolving into a being and all that. But on paper it doesn’t sound that interesting. Only when you start playing the game you go, wow! this is great game design.

It’s a really simple game to play though and its kind of open-ended. Think The Sims meets the Civilization series and you will pretty much end up with Spore. However, being simple and long, the game compensates by remembering your decisions as you mature/evolve into taking over the galaxy. But basically the decisions you make classifies you into three levels, aggressive, a mix or friendly.

I find the creation of your own creature part pretty tedious though although fun at first. You then get to design your own house, city hall, factory, entertainment centre, car, ship, plane and spaceship. If you are the sort of person who loved making a polka dot three storey house with a round kitchen on the top floor complete with differing criss-crossing tiles in Sims, you will be spending a whole lot of time in the Spore creating room. But if you don’t really bother and want to get to the good stuff, there’s thousands of ready made stuff for you. There’s an online option too of course, which I guess makes the game even more enjoyable, where you can view others’ creations.

But the gameplay is the most interesting part of the game. You start off pac-man like then become FPS and RPG (role-playing game) and then move on to a little strategy and then finish off with Civilization-like controls. For a ‘gamer’ like me, the mix-up is very stimulating!

The graphics is OK too. Of course it’s meant to be cute but you pretty much control how things look like anyway so you can mix and match as you please. It’s not Crysis-quality graphics of course but it still looks 2008 if you know what I mean.

Ah well, 4.5 out of 5 stars for me.

God bless!
